The State of New York claimed the lion’s share of positions on the 2005 NSCAA/adidas Boys High School Scholar All-America Team, placing five players on the squad, including two from Rochester, N.Y. A total of 10 states had more than one player on the team.
Leading the way were Rochester players Luke Lennox, a forward from The Harley School, and Joseph Mort, a midfielder from McQuaid Jesuit High School. Others from the Empire State are midfielders Alex Johnson of Niskayuna High School and Kelin Wheaton of Jasper-Troupsburg Center High and forward Eric Kanouse of Keshequa Central in Nunda.
Maryland placed three players on the squad: goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald of Loyola Blakefield High in Towson and defenders Mark Eisinger of Col. Zadok Magruder High in Rockville and Justin McGrath of Perry Hall High in Baltimore. Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Texas all placed two players on the squad. For five players, it was there second NSCAA award in less than a week: Fitzgerald, Johnson, goalkeeper Ryan Vint of Wayzata High School in Plymouth, Minn., and forwards Zachary Schilawski of Cary (N.C.) High School and Alex Wentzel of Exeter Township High School in Reading, Pa..
To be selected to the team, players must be seniors who have a minimum 3.75 cumulative grade point average and have exhibited excellence in high school soccer. The committee evaluates the players’ academic and athletic information as well as involvement with their communities. The 34 honorees will be invited to the NSCAA All-America Luncheon, which will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21, as part of the 2006 NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia, Pa.
