Garey, Sinclair Named NSCAA/adidas College Scholar Athletes of the Year
Both are finalists for the M.A.C.'s Hermann Trophy, to be announced Jan. 6
Jason Garey (Gonzales, La.) of the University of Maryland and Christine Sinclair (Burnaby, B.C.) of the University of Portland have been named the 2005 NSCAA/adias College Scholar Athletes of the Year. Both led their teams to the NCAA Division I title and are finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy, which will be presented on Friday, Jan. 6, in a news conference televised live at 7 p.m. EST on ESPNews.

Garey scored 22 goals and added seven assists for 51 points this season while leading the Terrapins to their first NCAA title. Maryland’s all-time leading goal-scorer (60), he also is the Terrapins’ all-time leader in career points (140). A finance major with a 3.47 grade point average, he set an NCAA Tournament record with two goals in 15 seconds in the semifinal match against SMU and was named the College Cup Offensive MVP. Twice selected as Player of the Year by Sports Illustrated On Campus, Garey also is a two-time NSCAA/adidas All-America and was named the ACC’s Offensive Player of the Year.

Sinclair has the opportunity to become the first female to win the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy and the NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America awards in the same season. A four-time NSCAA All-America, could become only the third female to win the Hermann Trophy in consecutive years. She led the nation in scoring with 39 goals and 88 total points while powering Portland to its second national title. Her 39 goals broke the NCAA season record of 37, while her 88 points marks the second highest in NCAA season history, trailing only Mia Hamm’s 97 in 25 games in 1992. Her 110 career goals are second in NCAA history and her 252 points rank second all-time. Portland’s all-time leader in goals, points, game-winners and shots, she set UP single-season records for goals and points while earning West Coast Conference Player of the Year for the third time in her career. In addition to balancing the demands of the college season and playing for the Canadian National Team, she has maintained a 3.75 grade point average in Life Science.

The two will be recognized on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at the All-America Luncheon, which will be held in conjunction with the annual NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia.
