  BSCC Member Anne Strong Honored!

Strong recognized for her years of work
bringing soccer programs to underserved Boston girls

Dear Friend,

Anne Strong, Director of Strategic Initiatives for America SCORES New England, was honored recently with an award by Germaine Lawrence at its 7th Annual Women of Excellence Breakfast for her work with CityKicks, an after-school soccer program serving 180 middle school girls in the Boston Public Schools.  Welcoming Anne and the 180 CityKicks girls to the SCORES family through our 9/1/2008 merger, the now larger America SCORES New England will reach 880 Boston public school students in 23 elementary and middle schools!  As a friend of CityKicks, we would also like to take this opportunity to thank you and recognize your commitment as an important member of our growing SCORES family.

Through our after school youth development program, America SCORES New England is raising a new generation of student-athletes by teaching kids that teamwork, learning, leadership and creativity go hand in hand on the field and in the classroom. Through our unique combination of soccer, literacy and service learning, our youth are developing active lifestyles, literacy and citizenship that will allow them to achieve their highest goals.

We have always depended upon private donations to fund our programs, which continue to grow and expand.  Your donation now - will support CityKicks' 180 girls and other Boston public school students - all of whom are our city's most vulnerable kids.  We promise you this:  By contributing to SCORES, you will maximize the return on your social investment.  The SCORES program is proven effective for improving fitness levels and literacy skills among our young student-athletes.

Be a part of our growing family. Be a part of a winning team. Make your gift today.

With deep gratitude,

Robert Shay                                                               Dennis Wright

Melvin Belong and Bethel College Take Men’s NAIA Crown in Thriller

Following a tense 90 minutes of regulation play, Bethel (Tenn.) Col-lege beat the University of Rio Grande (Ohio) 2-1 seconds into over-time to win the 2008 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship. Bethel forward Mario Vila Boa, the Tournament MVP chipped a 20-yard shot into the net 15 seconds into extra time.

Rio Grande’s All Tournament forward, Ederson Lopes, put the Red Storm on top in the 59th minute with his 24th goal of the season. Erick Rosas leveled the score 1-1 in the 71st minute on an assist from Joseph Omondi.

"I’m very delighted and happy," said Melvin Belong, Bethel’s second year coach. "Our guys worked hard all season and it paid off. All season long we focused on playing with character and not giving up…I believe our character carried us tonight."

Belong, a native of Surinam, was a member of his nation’s Under 18 National Player Pool. He came to the States to play collegiately for Oklahoma Wesleyan for two years before transferring to Bethel. Be-long played for the Wildcats and earned his BS in Business Admini-stration and Masters in Education.
