COACHING POSITION:

Athletic Director, Cranbrook Schools (retired)

Interview

How did you first become involved with the NSCAA?
Appointed as College Representative, ran for Board of Governors as College Rep.

Why do you continue to stay involved with the NSCAA?
To give back to the game as much as I can because the game is part of who I am. The opportunity to serve the game and the NSCAA is a privilege and an honor.

Why do you like teaching NSCAA courses?
The reasons above and the opportunity to interact with coaches - candidates and staff.

What is your favorite NSCAA course to teach and why?
National Diploma - because the candidates are usually serious about their coaching and I'd guess 70% will never take another course. The opportunity to "reach" those coaches is challenging and rewarding

What is the best thing about the NSCAA Academy?
Coaching coaches to be better at what and how they go about their coaching of players. The possible contribution to young people's lives as a coach is a tremendous opportunity and responsibility.

Who is your all-time favorite player?
Pele - his humility, graciousness and love for the game. I treasure the many times I watched him play (he scored in every one of those 30 or so matches) and the chance to meet and briefly talk with him.

Who are/were your mentors in soccer?
Bob Nye - High School soccer coach, George Cella - High school basketball coach from whom I learned a great deal about coaching. Bert Zenaty - Springfield College assistant coach, who introduced me to the affective side of playing. Lots of teammates who taught and helped me learn how to compete.

Who are your mentors in the coaching profession?
Peter Gooding, Jack Detchon, Doug Williamson, Ray Cieplik, David Saward

What advice would you give to young coaches?
Never forget that you are coaching players to whom the game belongs and never lose your passion for the game - have fun.

What is the last book you read?
Arc of Justice. Next one - John Wooden's on leadership

If you could be anyone for a day, who would it be and why?
A world-class player on the day the team wins the World Cup.
