COACHING POSITION:

Head Men's Coach, Bloomsburg University (Pa.)

Interview

How did you first become involved with the NSCAA?
I joined as an assistant HS coach and took my first coaching course in 1990.

Why do you continue to stay involved with the NSCAA?
A personal commitment to give something back to the game as both a coach and administrator.

Why do you like teaching NSCAA courses?
The NSCAA is about coaching education and sharing that knowledge. Egos are checked at the door and the academies become about learning.

What is your favorite NSCAA course to teach and why?
Advanced National Diploma - it reinforces the basic principals of the National Diploma while looking at the game from a tactical viewpoint.

What is the best thing about the NSCAA Academy?
The interaction among staff and candidates.

Who are/were your mentors in soccer?
May sound strange, but my fellow coaches - sharing ideas and the ups and downs of the profession.

Who are your mentors in the coaching profession?
My college coach Lee Hill gave me a foundation and I have looked to Jeff Tipping, Peter Gooding, Tony Waiters, Schellas Hyndman and Anson Dorrance as the role models within NSCAA.

What advice would you give to young coaches?
Never stop learning and never think you are bigger than the game. It's a player's game.

What is your favorite book and why?
"Working" by Stods Terkal - everyday people talk about their everyday jobs from poor to rich. Gives an appreciation for what we do everyday for a living (good and bad).

What is your favorite movie and why?
Godfather (Part I) - Sense of family being what is most important.

What is the last book you read?
"The Carolina Way"
