“As part of an overall evaluation of our program, Dedham Youth Soccer recently participated in the assessment. It was the general feeling of the DYS Board of Directors that the program had become a bit stale, and that our all-volunteer program would benefit from a detailed review and evaluation.
The review was informed, noting many basic organizational and curriculum principles and topics that DYS had overlooked or not considered. Completing the process generated discussion among members on many of the topics, with implementation of potential significant changes to the program the underlying concern.”

“In the fall of 2010 we had a full–on review of how we conducted ourselves as an organization. The process was very thorough and in some aspects eye opening to what we were deficient in. At the end of the process, we knew exactly where we needed to improve and what our strengths were. The consultant sat down with the board and went over point for point what we can do to improve the level of soccer skill in Worcester.
We knew we were limited in the number of volunteers and stretched thin with the duties our volunteers were taking on. The report cited things such as not providing enough oversight of coaches during practices and games. Again a byproduct of not having enough bodies with soccer knowledge to do such, but something that we knew was important. A more professional coaching education program was recommended.
The attention to detail and expertise in coaching soccer were immense to us as they created a blueprint from which we could build upon.”

“Prior to the assessment, the Board was struggling with how to strengthen the Club, improve its coach and player development programs, develop short and long term strategic plans, and increase volunteerism. The Club knew it had weaknesses in these areas and knew it did not have the expertise or tools to critically assess them. In addition, it did not have the people resources to conduct an in-depth analysis and develop executable recommendations.
The assessment provided a structured approach. The assessment consisted of an initial survey to gain an understating of the Club’s philosophy, programs, organization, etc. Step two consisted of a series of in-depth interviews with Board members and coaches. This was followed by a number of meetings to review the preliminary findings. The final step was a comprehensive assessment that detailed the strengths and weaknesses in each of the focus areas.
The report also provided a rating for each of the components that made up the focus areas. For example, for coaching there was a score for: a) recruitment of volunteer coaches, b) coaching education plan and program, c) support for volunteer coaches, d) support for coaching vendors, e) experience and qualifications of coaches, and f) and overall score. An actionable recommendation was provided for each component.
As a result of the assessment, the Club has implemented a number of the recommendations, including:
• A comprehensive player development curriculum
• A short and long term facilities development plan
• A coach development and assessment program
• An enhanced communication process with our families including seasonal surveys
• Increase focus on our recreational programs
The assessment provided a roadmap for the Club to strengthen its programs and enhance the player’s soccer experience. Although we are still in the process of implementing some of the recommendations, the Club has a clear vision of where it wants to go and it has an operational implementation framework as a result of the assessment. In summary, I would recommend the assessment to any Club that wants to improve its performance and strengthen both coach and player development.”

“Through the evaluation process, we were able to look analytically at our organizational structure, board of director’s roles and responsibilities, web-site quality, methods of communication to our membership as well as our approach to training and development.
The report identified areas to consider changing that offered critical impact. Our intramural program now has frameworks, coach’s guide lines, curriculum that is age appropriate, session plans that focus on player development with consistent skill sets. We will be focusing on an player assessment process and revamping our travel tryout process as a next step. The assessment provided a chronological approach to the order of change.
We restructured our board positions, held our first coaches meeting in years, launched a new web-site and continually dedicate more time to player development and coaches training. It will be interesting to look at our organization in a year for our next assessment session.”

“At the point in time when Wakefield Soccer Association (WSA) decided to participate in the assessment process, our soccer organization lacked consistency in the approach, structure and vision surrounding our overall curriculum as well as our coach and player development programs. After completing the survey and seeing how WSA lined up in a host of areas against best practices within the industry, the resulting report in effect became our organization’s “strategy blueprint”, providing a framework of direction on multiple areas of opportunity for improvement within our program, including “best in class” player and coach development curriculums and training toolsets, and an enhanced focus on volunteerism, fundraising and administrative process efficiencies.
Beyond the obvious benefits gained by seeing how our organization “stacked up” against others in the sport, where WSA saw the biggest value was in the extremely insightful and well thought out recommendations that were provided to us to by the consultants, aimed towards helping to move our program in a direction in which every child is given the best possible opportunity to maximize their potential as soccer players, within a fun-filled and positive environment.
In the time since receiving the results of the evaluation process, WSA has made significant strides in many of the areas citied in the assessment, and while much still work remains to be done, we are very confident that the organizational roadmap provided in the report will ensure the continued success of Wakefield Soccer Association going forward.”
