This article presents the training model for physical development used by Saint Louis University. The goal of this model is to improve "speed of play." This involves a solid understanding of the tactical philosophy used by the coaching staff, a fundamental technical base, and the physical development necessary to support the tactical and technical. The article also attempts to put a definition on the frequently used term "functional training," a term that has recently become widely used to describe training specific to the given physical demands of a sport.
