This articles deals with the development of soccer players' ability to "play at speed." The ability to predict what will happen in a given situation, to accelerate thought processes two-steps ahead of the competition, is especially critical at higher levels of play where even the slightest edge may be the difference between success and failure. If a player can effectively visualize what is about to happen, then it follows that he or she can respond in advance with the most appropriate course of action. Coaches commonly refer to this ability as "reading the game." The player who possesses the wherewithal to quickly analyze a given situation and predict its outcome has a decided advantage over the player who does not.
