Ohio University Master's Program Details

In January 2013, The Patton College of Education at Ohio University and the NSCAA announced a new master’s track in Recreation and Sport Sciences with a concentration in Soccer Coaching. The curriculum is the first of its kind in the United States, and the program faculty is currently accepting applications for its first cohort of students.

This unique degree program will be delivered in an online format with two face-to-face residencies. Ohio University will admit two cohorts per year, one in January and one in June. The program is slated to begin June 2013.

Program Requirements

The Ohio University Master's Degree in Recreation and Sport Sciences with a Concentration in Soccer Coaching consists of 12 academic courses delivered primarily online during the course of six semesters. Two of the courses are delivered in face-to-face residencies at either a NSCAA Convention or on the campus of Ohio University. Students will be part of a cohort structure that keep learning-groups small (25 students) and allows for high levels of interaction among students and faculty. Two cohorts will be admitted per year, one in summer/fall and the second in January.

The following REQUIRED residencies are scheduled:

  • Cohort 1 - Opening Residency in Athens, OH - June 2013
  • Cohort 2 - Opening Residency at NSCAA Convention (Philadelphia) - January 2014
  • Cohort 3 - Opening Residency in Athens, OH - June 2014
  • Cohort 4 - Opening Residency at NSCAA Convention - January 2015

Admission Requirements

A prospective student must meet the following requirements to be considered for unconditional admission to the School of Recreation and Sport Pedagogy Graduate Program in Soccer Coaching:

  • Earned bachelor's degree in exercise physiology, physical education, sport sciences, recreation or related field from an accredited college or university. If your bachelor's degree is in an unrelated field, you may still be admitted.
  • A minimum of three years of soccer coaching experience completed after earning a bachelor’s degree.
  • An minimum of a NSCAA Level 6 Coaching Diploma, USSF “D” license or equivalent
  • Minimum overall undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale on the last 90 quarter hours or the last 60 semester hours.
  • Satisfactory Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. (GRE requirement is waived with a GPA above 3.0).
  • A $50 nonrefundable application fee applies.
