2013 Summer Symposium Presenters

Alexi Lalas, TV Analyst, ESPN and ABC Sports

Lalas broke out onto the national and international stage in 1991 with the U.S. Men’s National Team. In March 1991, he earned his first of his 96 caps in a 2-2 tie with Mexico. In addition to his spot with the USMNT, Lalas would also spend time with the Italian Serie A club, Padova. His professional experiences also included stints with several Major League Soccer teams, including the New England Revolution, the MetroStars (the precursor to the New York Red Bulls), the Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting KC) and the Los Angeles Galaxy. Following his playing days, Lalas has continued to play a role in the sport that he’s played for so many years. He served as president and general manager for the San Jose Earthquakes, the New York Red Bulls and the Los Angeles Galaxy. He now works as an analyst for ESPN and ABC Sports. [+] Read more here

Dawn Scott, Fitness Coach, U.S. Women’s National Team

Dawn Scott first worked with the U.S. Women’s National Team in January of 2010 and joined Pia Sundhage’s staff full-time the following February. Scott came to U.S. Soccer from the England Football Association, where she worked since 2001 as an Exercise Scientist, primarily working with the England Women’s National Teams. Her responsibilities with the U.S. women will include the delivery, coordination and monitoring of the team’s strength and conditioning, as well as the nutritional and exercise science strategies for the team. Scott will also be working to coordinate with the WPS clubs to monitor the fitness of the National Team players, as well as working with the USA’s youth girls’ and women’s National Teams. Jason Mathews, General Mngr./Dir. of Sports Performance, CB3

Jason R. (Jay) Mathews is a sports medicine professional with a wealth of athletic training and sports performance experience. He was the Head Athletic Trainer and Strength Coach for the Chicago Steel, of the US Hockey League. He then spent the 2002-2005 seasons as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Chicago Fire. During this time, the team won a U.S. Open Cup; a Supporter’s Shield Trophy and was an MLS Cup Finalist. Mathews also earned the 2003 Athletic Trainer of the Year award for MLS. He then spent the 2007-2009 seasons with the Columbus Crew as the Head Athletic Trainer and he was the Head Strength and Fitness Coach in 2009. The Crew won back to back Supporter’s Shields in 2008 and 2009 and the 2008 MLS Cup. Mathews has also been the lead athletic trainer for several US Soccer U-18 and U-20 MNT camps and tournaments.

Becky Burleigh, Head Coach, University of Florida

After helping start up the University of Florida’s soccer program in 1995 Burleigh helped UF claim an NCAA title in 1998. In 17 seasons at the Head Coach position at UF, Burleigh has helped lead the Gators to two NCAA College Cup appearances, 11 Southeastern Conference titles and 15 NCAA Championships berths.  Additionally, Burleigh picked up National (1998) and SEC Coach of the Year (2010, ‘08, ‘00 & '96) honors. Her career winning percentage ranks No. 3 among all Active Coaches in NCAA Division I at 77.0% (382-103-32).

Tony Sanneh, Former U.S. Men's National Team Player
President and Executive Director of The Sanneh Foundation

Toney Sanneh is a highly decorated retired American soccer player. Before Sanneh’s illustrious professional career, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he became the Panthers all-time leading scorer. In his time at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Sanneh was named to the NCAA Second-Team All-American team in 1993. After a productive college career Sanneh decided to take his talents to the next level in pursuit of a professional career. In a professional career that spanned 15 years Sanneh would go on to play at the highest level on two different continents. Sanneh’s career included time with D.C. United, Hertha BSC, 1.FC Nuremberg, Columbus Crew, Chicago Fire, Colorado Rapids, and the L.A. Galaxy. Additionally Sanneh made 43 appearances with United States Men’s National Team. In his time with the US MNT Sanneh was an integral part of the 2002 World Cup team and also won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2005.

Bob Gansler, Head Coach, U.S. Men's National Team (retired)

Bob Gansler is one of the most successful U.S. National Team coaches in history. Additionally Gansler has enjoyed tremendous success in the MLS. Gansler coached the U.S. Men’s National Team from 1989 to 1991. During his tenure as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National team he coached in the 1990 World Cup. His coaching experience at the professional level includes time at Kansas City of MLS and Milwaukee of the A-League, where he won league titles with both teams. He was also named Major League Soccer’s Coach of the Year in 2000.

Tony DiCicco, Director, NSCAA Goalkeeping Academy; CEO/Founder of SoccerPlus

Tony DiCicco has a wealth of coaching experience most notably with the United States Women’s National team from 1994-1999. During his tenure as head coach of the United States Women’s National team he won Olympic gold in 1996 and the Women’s World Cup in 1999. Additional coaching experience includes time spent coaching the Boston Breakers and the U-20 US Women’s National Team.

Tosh Farrell, Everton FC Youth Academy (former)

Tosh is a former coach of the English Premier League club, Everton F.C. During his career he has helped developed a very impressive list of players including Wayne Rooney, Victor Anichebe, James Vaughan, and several other players. Tosh is the creator of the “Everton Way”, which was the first training program that was made readily available on the internet. Additionally he is responsible for partnerships that Everton have made with Everton F.C. America and the Ontario Soccer Association.

Mark Koski, National Federation of High Schools, Director of Sports and Events

Mark Koski is the editor of the NFHS Soccer Rules Book, the liaison to the NFHS Soccer Rules Committee and is the Director of Sports and Events for the NFHS. He assumed his current duties in August 2007. Previously he was an assistant director for the New Mexico Activities Association in Albuquerque, N.M.

George Perry, Vice President for Education, NSCAA and Commissioner of Indiana Soccer League

George has extensive experience coaching soccer at the collegiate level. Over the length of his career he spent 5 years at Indiana University, Bloomington as the Head Women’s Soccer Coach and Assistant with the Men’s Team.  After that he coached the University of Rochester Men’s soccer team for 6 years until he took the Men’s head coaching job at St. Bonaventure University where he would go on to coach at for the next 6 years.  After that, he would go on to coach at Wabash and Monmouth Colleges where he coached until he took his current position with Indiana Soccer as Commissioner of the Indiana Soccer League.

Bill Buren, US Youth Soccer National Coaching Staff, Florida Youth Soccer Coaching Staff

Buren is the winner of the 2013 Dr. Thomas Fleck Award for Excellence in Youth Coaching Education. Buren has proven to be a key educator for coaches, instructing more than 300 courses during his career to help other coaches improve their craft. In 1995, he was named to the committee that developed the National Youth License coaching course and the State Youth Modules. He is also the co author of The Official US Youth Soccer Coaching Manual and has taught the National Youth License course.

Dave Carr, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Coaching Education at Ohio University

Dr. Carr received the US Youth Soccer Thomas Fleck Award for Excellence in Coaching Education, honoring a lifetime of dedication and far reaching contributions to the process by which youth soccer coaches are educated in America.  Dr. Carr is the Coordinator of Coaching Education in the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences at Ohio University.  He is the co-author of the US Youth Soccer Official Coaching Manual and co-developer of the US Youth Soccer National Youth License Program and Youth Coaching Modules. As well as a National Staff coach for the US Soccer Federation and a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) where serves on the editorial board of Soccer Journal. Dr. Carr has played a key role in coordination and curriculum development of Ohio University's new master's track in Recreation and Sport Science with a concentration in Soccer Coaching. Neil Hull, Director, Players Academy of Soccer Skills (PASS)

Neil Hull is the NSCAA State Director in Texas. He is the leading State Director for teaching and promoting courses. Neil has coached a variety of NSCAA courses, including the National Diploma and Goalkeeping courses. In 2010, he was the NSCAA Associate Staff Coach of the year.

He is currently the Director of Players Academy of Soccer Skills (PASS) and is on the COERVER National Staff. Neil has been coaching in the US for over 12 years and 23 years worldwide, he has been involved in the sport all his life. Coach Hull has educated players at the Club, College and Olympic Development levels.

He is a graduate of the University of Texas- San Antonio and has separate degrees in Kinesiology and Sports Science.

Ian Barker, NSCAA Director of Coaching Education

Ian Barker joins the NSCAA staff after serving as the men’s soccer coach at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., a position he assumed in 2003 after four years as an assistant coach for the squad. He also has collegiate coaching experience at the University of Wisconsin, where he was an assistant coach for the men’s team from 1989-97, helping the Badgers to four NCAA tournament appearances in a five-year span. The 1995 team won the Big 10 title and claimed the NCAA national championship. Barker’s coaching education credentials are impressive. He has served as a staff instructor for US Soccer’s coaching education program since 1999, teaching both state and nationally hosted residential licenses. He has also instructed the National Youth License for US Youth Soccer.  From 1997 through 2007, he also served as Director of Coaching and Player Development for the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA).
