Youth Coaching Recommendations

The following courses are what the NSCAA recommends for coaches who teach players at the youth level. Depending on your education background and experience, you may enter at diff­erent stages of the suggested outline.  Click HERE to check out the course menu.

Time Commitment

Level 1 Diploma

This Diploma is designed to help coaches implement developmentally appropriate training games to improve skill levels in a fun and safe environment. The Diploma has three parts, classroom with theory of coaching U6-U8, field work with coaches and field work with U6-U8 players. Coaches not working at this age group would benefit greatly from an appreciation of the developmental abilities and needs of this important age group.

4 Hours

Level 2 Diploma

This Diploma develops on the ideas in Level 1 and is designed to help coaches implement developmentally appropriate training games to improve skill levels in a fun, safe and challenging environment. The Diploma has three parts, classroom with theory of coaching U8-U10, field work with coaches and field work with U8-U10 players. Coaches not working at this age group would benefit greatly from an appreciation of the developmental abilities and needs of this important age group.

6 Hours

Level 3 Diploma

This Diploma is a valuable and necessary one for many coaches. The material in this course is designed to assist the coach who has been asked to step up for the first time to coach a team in competition. The course is, in part, conducted in the classroom covering the role of the coach, methodology and player development. The field portions of the course cover a variety of helpful training ideas primarily designed to improve technical ability. The field work also shows coaches a variety of small sided games to use and features a sample session conducted by the instructor.

9 Hours

Level 4 Diploma

This Diploma is strongly partnered with Level 5. The primary focus of the Level 4 Diploma is to assist coaches in their teaching of technique as it is applied in the game. The course includes coaches designing a lesson plan, participating in practical field work and observing a model session. Level 4 concludes with the presentation of small side game activities that teach technique.

 

12 Hours

Level 5 Diploma

This Diploma is strongly partnered with Level 4. The primary focus of the Level 5 Diploma is to assist coaches in their teaching of tactics as applied in small groups. The course discusses the principles of play and the roles of players. Coaches spend time designing a lesson plan. Coaches also see tactics taught in small games and are exposed to a series of different teaching methodologies.

12 Hours

Level 6 Diploma

This Diploma is an excellent preparatory course for coaches going onto the National Diploma. One third of the course is dedicated to candidates presenting on assigned topics and enjoying feedback on their performance in both methods and content. Expanding upon the content of the Level 4 and 5 Diplomas this course includes a session on reading the game as well as coaching technique and tactics with in 4 vs.4 and 6 vs. 6 models of play.

18 Hours

National Diploma

The overall objective of the National Diploma is to acquaint the coach with the needs of the American soccer player and provide an organized and progressive methodology of coaching those needs. Basic technical and tactical knowledge is the central theme of the course in a 6 v. 6 model. The course includes sessions on the teaching process, psychological skills training and Laws of the Game.

50 hours instruction, 6 hours evaluation

Advanced National Diploma

The Advanced National Diploma emphasis is on training those players within a team concept designed to produce a successful environment. The 8 v. 8 model is the main focus. The curriculum includes team organization and training, advanced methodology, analysis and understanding systems of play, a focus on tactics within thirds of the field, technical position overviews, match analysis and the psychological aspect of coaching. 

50 hours instruction, 6 hours evaluation

Premier Diploma

The Premier Diploma is the pinnacle of the Residential Academy offerings. The course content includes a thorough examination of different systems of play, including: technical and tactical implications; 11 v. 11 topics, including coaching in the game, phase play and shadow play; nutrition; sportsmanship/ethics; and a leadership component including team management, personal development and the coach’s role in game development in his/her community.

50 hours instruction, 6 hours evaluation

Master Coach DIploma

The Master Coach Diploma builds upon the 150 hours of field and classroom learning contained in the NSCAA National, Advanced National, and Premier Diploma courses.  All coaches in the program will have the opportunity to learn and grow in fields such as sport psychology, leadership, team and organizational management, use of technology and nutrition.

18 Months

Goalkeeping Level 1 DIploma

The overall objective of this course is to explore some of the myths and mystiques surrounding the goalkeeping function.  The six-hour course is directed towards the team coach - not the specialist goalkeeper coach.

6 Hours

Goalkeeping Level 2 Diploma

The overall objective of this course is to create an optimal learning environment for this specialized position.  The 12-hour course is geared towards the specialist goalkeeping coach and the team coach looking for in-depth information surrounding the coaching of goalkeepers. 

12 Hours

Goalkeeping Level 3 Diploma

The overall objective of this course is to explore the tactical components of goalkeeping and the specifics of training and developing goalkeepers.  The emphasis of this eighteen-hour course is on the tactical role of the goalkeeper within the team framework. 

18 Hours

Advanced National Goalkeeping Diploma

Ts course  builds on the Level 3 Goalkeeping Diploma course. This is a 50-hour residential course and is one of the most comprehensive goalkeeping courses for coaches anywhere in the world. Lectures on all aspects of advanced positioning, communication, goalkeeper psychology, fitness and methodology for training goalkeepers will be addressed.
