NSCAA Honors Long-Term Contributors

Martin, Buss, Quinn and Williamson recognized at Awards Banquet

Four men who have contributed to the NSCAA and the advancement of the sport of soccer were recognized Friday night with the presentation of the association's long-term service awards.

Jay Martin, Ray Buss, Ron Quinn and Doug Williamson each were selected for honors in their area of specialty.

Bill Jeffrey Award – Dr. Jay Martin, Ohio Wesleyan University
Since 1977, Jay Martin has served as the men’s coach at Ohio Wesleyan University. In November, he recorded his 500th career victory. Under his direction, the Battling Bishops recorded an .825 winning percentages in the 1990s and his appeared in more NCAA tournaments than any other Division III team. A long-time member of the NSCAA Coaching Academy staff, Martin served as the NSCAA president in 1996 and assumed the editorship of Soccer Journal in January 2003. The award is named in honor of the late Bill Jeffrey, the former coach at Penn State who guided the U.S. to a 1-0 victory over England in the 1950 World Cup.

Robert W. Robinson Award – Ray Buss, Fleetwood Area High School
A member of the NSCAA Hall of Fame, Buss has given countless hours as a volunteer in support of the association, its programs and the sport in general. He retired as coach at Fleetwood High School in 1991 after compiling a record of 512-99-48. He has received 15 coach of the year awards, including NSCAA National Coach of the Year 1980. The former national chair of the High School Boys All-America committee, he had a total of nine players achieve that honor. Recipient of the NISOA Merit Award, the National Federation’s Distinguished Service Award and the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association Honor Award, he also is a member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. The award is named after Robert W. Robinson, the former coach at Lower Merion High School in Philadelphia and a long-time officer with the NSCAA. He now serves the association as its Convention Manager.

Youth Long-Term Service Award – Dr. Ron Quinn, Cincinnati, Ohio
The former women’s coach at Xavier University, Quinn led the Musketeers to a pair of Atlantic-10 Conference tournament championships. However, he is best known for his work in youth soccer, where he has been a tireless contributor to the good of the game. He has become an author of note on youth soccer, contributing such titles as “Coach’s Little Book of Wisdom: Hints, Tips and Insights for Coaching Kids” “The Peak Performance: Soccer Games for Player Development” and “The Baffled Parents’ Guide to Great Soccer Drills,” which he co-wrote with Dr. Tom Fleck. He also helped write the Offical US Youth Soccer Coaching Manual with Fleck and Dr. David Carr.

Mike Berticelli Excellence in Coaching Education Award – Doug Williamson
A long-time member of the NSCAA educational staff, Dr. Doug Williamson recently was promoted to the Academy Senior Staff. Earlier this month he assumed the position of Director of Coaching for the Greater Harford Soccer Club in the Baltimore area. In 2001, he bgean a stint as coach at Augusta Prep Day School in Augusta, Georgia, where he also taught history, world religions, geography and social ethics. With more than 300 wins over the course of his 21-year coaching career, he has earned a reputation of nurturing players to perform to the best of their ability, having coached 11 All-Americas, 17 Scholar All-Americas, 19 all-region players, and 27 all-conference players. The award is named in honor of the late Mike Berticelli, who was coach of the Notre Dame men's team. At the time of his death in 2000, Berticelli was serving as the NSCAA's Vice-President for Education. The award recognizes excellence in the field of soccer coaching education.
