Yael Averbuch (North Carolina/Upper Montclair, N.J.) earned the distinction of being named the 2008 NSCAA/adidas Women’s Collegiate Scholar Athlete of the Year, leading a group of 75 players named to the NSCAA/adidas Women’s Collegiate Scholar All-America Team.

Averbuch gives the ACC its third consecutive Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Year, joining North Carolina’s Heather O’Reilly in 2006 and Virginia’s Becky Sauerbrunn in 2007. A three-time NSCAA/adidas All-America, she led the Tar Heels to two national championships and was an MAC Hermann Trophy finalist as a sophomore. Recipient of the NCAA’s Today’s Top VIII Award, she also was named the 2008 CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year. She maintains a 3.71 GPA with a major in psychology. Active in community outreach programs, she is a member of the Carolina Leadership Academy’s Veteran Leaders program and has been presented its highest honor, the Three-Dimensional Leader Award. A member of the U.S. U-23 National Team in 2007, she earned two caps while training with the full U.S. National Team.

Eleven players scored repeat selection to the team. Included among the repeaters is Zoe Bouchelle (Penn State/Cockeysville, Md.), who was selected the NSCAA/adidas Girls High School Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2003.

The Scholar All-America selections were recognized at the annual All-America Luncheon, held in St. Louis, Mo., on Jan. 17, as part of the 2009 NSCAA Convention.
