McKenzie Barney (Florida/Sammamish, Wash.) and Andrew Fontein (UC Irvine/Las Vegas, Nev.) posted stellar efforts to earn NSCAA National Player of the Week honors for the week of Sept. 15.
Barney’s goal a mere 15 seconds into the first overtime period lifted Florida to a 2-1 win over in-state rival Florida State and boost the Gators to No. 5 in the NSCAA/HendrickCars.com national rankings. Fontein logged a total of 14 saves in three games to keep the Anteaters undefeated and move them up four spots to No. 10.
Each week, a male and female player will be selected by a committee from a nomination pool comprised of players of the week from each NCAA Division I soccer conference. The players will be announced each Wednesday afternoon from now until Nov. 3 through NSCAA.com, the official website of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. They also will be recognized at halftime of the NSCAA College Game of the Week on Fox Soccer Channel, a schedule of 20 men’s and women’s intercollegiate matches. This Friday will mark a first in the history of the package when both a men’s and women’s game will originate from the same location. The No. 11 Duke men’s team will host No. 4 North Carolina in a battle to determine early ACC supremacy, with kickoff slated for 6:30 p.m. ET. Immediately afterward, the No. 17 Duke women’s team will face No. 5 Florida in an ACC-SEC inter-conference clash. That game is scheduled to begin at 8:45 p.m. ET.
McKenzie Barney
M, So., Florida, Sammamish, Wash.
Barney used the quickest goal from a kickoff in the program’s 16-year history to give Florida a 2-1 OT win over then No. 10 Florida State on Sept. 10 in Tallahassee. Barney put in the golden goal just 15 seconds into overtime action, bettering the previous quick goal (19 seconds) scored by All-America Abby Wambach at Mississippi to open the 2000 match. It was the first golden goal for Barney. She leads UF in goals (5) and points (12).
Andrew Fontein
K, Jr., UC Irvine, Las Vegas, Nev.
Fontein continued his outstanding start to the 2010 season last week, recording a trio of shutouts for UC Irvine. The junior started the week with a pair of saves in a 1-0 whitewash of Wisconsin, leading UCI to the UC Irvine College Classic title. He then took his defensive abilities to the Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Tournament, blanking a pair of high-octane offenses. Fontein’s first game saw him record a season-best eight saves against Oakland, then he added four more stops against Air Force two days later. For his efforts, Fontein was named to the All-Tournament team at both events and was the Defensive MVP of the San Diego Tournament. He is now tied atop the Anteater list for career shutouts (14) and wins (25).

I wish someone uploaded a legible copy of the Bob Gansler & Tony DiCiccio presentations at The Orlando event. I was there, it was awesome, and now I can't read my diagram/notes as to how the ball/players move!
