Katy Frierson (Auburn/Homewood, Ala.) and Darlington Nagbe (Akron/Lakewood, Ohio) launched their teams to victories over ranked opponents to gain NSCAA National Player of the Week honors for the week of Sept. 8.

Frierson was the hero in Auburn’s double-overtime victory over No. 5 Florida State, banging home the game-winner with 2:57 left in the game, while Nagbe kept the No. 1 Akron Zips flawless this season with wins over a pair of ranked ACC teams in No. 3 Wake Forest and No. 4 North Carolina.

Each week, a male and female player will be selected by a committee from a nomination pool comprised of players of the week from each NCAA Division I soccer conference. The players will be announced each Wednesday afternoon from now until Nov. 3 through NSCAA.com, the official website of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. They also will be recognized at halftime of the NSCAA College Game of the Week on Fox Soccer Channel, a schedule of 20 men’s and women’s intercollegiate matches. The women’s first broadcast will be at 7 p.m. ET Thursday, Sept. 9, when Kentucky travels to Louisville for a Bluegrass Battle. Friday night’s men’s contest will feature Virginia Tech at South Florida for an 8 p.m. ET kickoff Sept. 10.

Frierson scored the game-winner against No. 5 Florida State, putting the ball in the net with just 2:57 left in the second overtime. The goal was the third game-winner for her and the 10th of her career, which is just one shy of the school record. She also added an assist against the Seminoles. Frierson followed that up with a goal in Auburn's 3-0 win over Western Carolina to give her a goal in three consecutive contests. With her two goals and an assist over the weekend, Frierson now has 18 career goals, 20 career assists and 56 career points.

Darlington Nagbe
F/M, Jr., Akron, Lakewood, Ohio
Nagbe scored a goal in each game to lead the No. 1 University of Akron men's soccer team to a pair of victories over ACC powerhouses No. 4 North Carolina (3-0) and No. 3 Wake Forest (2-0). The striker from Lakewood, Ohio, also assisted on the game-winning goal Sunday as the Zips posted their second straight shutout to start the season against the Demon Deacons before the largest regular-season crowd (4,583) in the history of Spry Stadium. All four of Nagbe’s shots during the weekend were on goal.
