Sade Ayinde (Maryland/North Bellmore, N.Y.) and Arthur Ivo (SMU/Braganca Paulista, Brazil) have been selected as the NSCAA National Player of the Week honors for the week of Oct. 27.

Ayinde’s two goals gave the No. 5 Terps their first-ever win over the fabled North Carolina side, while Ivo pushed the No. 5 Mustangs to the top of the Conference USA table with two goals and as many assists last week.

Each week, a male and female player will be selected by a committee from a nomination pool comprised of players of the week from each NCAA Division I soccer conference. The players will be announced each Wednesday afternoon from now until Nov. 3 through NSCAA.com, the official website of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. They also will be recognized at halftime of the NSCAA College Game of the Week on Fox Soccer Channel, a schedule of 20 men’s and women’s intercollegiate matches.

As the schedule begins to draw to a close, the action heats up with three games this week. The only Wednesday contest turns the FSC cameras to the West Coast on Oct. 27 for a rivalry when the No. 19 UC Santa Barbara men head to Cal Poly for an 11 p.m. ET kick. That is followed by a Friday night doubleheader that leads with a Missouri Valley Conference men’s battle between Eastern Illinois and the home-standing University of Evansville Purple Aces at 8 p.m. ET. The nightcap features a Pac-10 women’s clash when Washington heads south to tackle UCLA at 11 p.m. ET.

Sade Ayinde
F, Jr., Maryland, North Bellmore, N.Y.

Ayinde scored both goals in the final 12 minutes as the Terps came from behind to defeat North Carolina on the road, 2-1. Maryland’s win came against a Tar Heel team that had won six straight games and entered the match leading the ACC. The win was the sixth-ranked Terps’ third over a fellow top-10 opponent this season, but their first-ever over UNC. Prior to Sunday’s win, Maryland was 0-30-1 all-time vs. the Tar Heels. Ayinde tied the game 1-1 in the 78th minute when she ran onto a long kick by Terp keeper Yewande Balogun and finished with a beautiful one-timer with the outside of her right foot into the right side of the Tar Heel goal. The game remained tied until the 85th minute, when a foul on Maryland’s Jasmyne Spencer just outside the UNC 18 gave the Terps a free kick. Ayinde calmly stepped to the ball and sent a low shot under the wall that found the back of the net. Ayinde also figured in the Terps’ lone goal vs. Wake Forest earlier in the week, setting up Ashley Grove’s score with an assist in the 73rd minute.

Arthur Ivo
M/F, Sr., SMU, Braganca Paulista, Brazil

Ivo scored two goals, both on free kicks, and assisted on two other tallies as SMU went 2-0 this week. His efforts helped SMU to clinch a berth in the 2010 Conference USA Men's Soccer Championship and take over the top spot in the conference rankings. On Oct. 20 against No. 17 Tulsa, Ivo netted a goal in the 62nd minute on a free kick, firing a shot from 40 yards out to tie the game at two. Ivo then assisted on the game-winner as he fed a ball to Robbie Derschang, who dribbled 40 yards downfield before sending the ball into the far upper 90 for the win. Saturday in a 3-0 win over Memphis, Ivo netted a goal in the 49th minute on a set piece from 20 yards out, firing the ball just inside the right post for his seventh goal of the year. He also assisted on a goal when he set up for another free kick just outside the box and hit the crossbar, only to have teammate Leone Cruz follow with the put-back goal. Ivo has now converted free kicks in back-to-back games for the Mustangs and has collected at least one point in four consecutive games. He ranks second on the team in goals (7), assists (4) and points (18).
