Kate Howarth (Miami/Grand Blanc, Mich.) and Mark Sherrod (Memphis/Knoxville, Tenn.) led their teams to undefeated weeks and have earned Disney Soccer/NSCAA National Player of the Week honors for Oct. 19.

Howarth sparked the Hurricanes to wins over to nationally-ranked ACC foes, while Sherrod had a pair of hat tricks in as many outings to move up the national scoring leaders list.

Each week, a male and female player will be selected by a committee from a nomination pool comprised of players of the week from each NCAA Division I soccer conference. The players will be announced each Wednesday afternoon from now until Nov. 8 through NSCAA.com, the official website of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. They also will be recognized at halftime of the NSCAA College Game of the Week on Fox Soccer, a schedule of 20 men’s and women’s intercollegiate matches. This week attention turns to an in-state ACC rivalry as Virginia hosts Virginia Tech in a 7 p.m. ET start on Thursday, Oct. 20. On Friday, Oct. 21, the West Virginia Mountaineers men’s side will host Providence in a Big East battle beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

Kate Howarth
F, Jr., Miami, Grand Blanc, Mich.

Howarth led the Hurricanes to a pair of wins over nationally ranked opponents. Howarth contributed a pair of assists in last Thursday night’s 3-2 upset of ninth-ranked Boston College, including the assist on Jordan Roseboro’s game-winning goal in the 75th minute. Howarth scored both goals in Sunday’s 2-1 win over 16th-ranked Maryland. The Grand Blanc, Mich., forward’s second goal came in the 62nd minute and snapped a 1-1 tie. Howarth leads Miami in scoring this season with nine goals and six assists and is tied for fourth among ACC players in scoring with 24 points.

Mark Sherrod
F, So., Memphis, Knoxville, Tenn.

Sherrod recorded back-to-back hat tricks in Memphis’ games last week, a 5-0 win over Nebraska-Omaha and 3-0 win at Tulsa. The sophomore forward attempted 14 shots, placing 10 on frame, en route to scoring six goals in the two contests. He also has been named to the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer National Teams of the Week for his efforts. Sherrod is among the nation’s leaders in goals (14) and points (30). He has helped Memphis to an 8-3-1 record on the season.
