Katie Stengel (Wake Forest/Melbourne, Fla.) and Phillip Aseweh (Liberty/Narongo, Ghana) each scored three goals last week to earn Disney Soccer/NSCAA National Player of the Week honors for Sept. 21.
Stengel scored both goals in the Demon Deacons' 2-0 win over No. 3 Florida State, while Aseweh helped the Flames to their first victory over the University of Virginia.
Each week, a male and female player will be selected by a committee from a nomination pool comprised of players of the week from each NCAA Division I soccer conference. The players will be announced each Wednesday afternoon from now until Nov. 8 through NSCAA.com, the official website of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. They also will be recognized at halftime of the NSCAA College Game of the Week on Fox Soccer, a schedule of 20 men’s and women’s intercollegiate matches. This week the reigning NCAA champion No. 20 Notre Dame Fighting Irish head to Tampa, Fla., to face South Florida on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. ET. Two nights later, the No. 17 Irish men’s side will host No. 5 Louisville in a 7 p.m. start from South Bend, Ind.
Katie Stengel
F, So., Wake Forest, Melbourne, Fla.
Stengel led the Demon Deacons to an unbeaten week that included a home-field win over third-ranked Florida State in their ACC opener and a road victory at South Carolina. The Melbourne, Fla., sophomore, who leads the ACC with 11 goals already this season, almost single-handedly led the Demon Deacons past the Seminoles in Thursday night’s regionally-televised game, scoring both goals in the 2-0 win to give Wake its highest-ranked victory since 2004. She followed it up with a goal in the 2-0 win at South Carolina to extend her point-scoring streak to five games. Stengel’s 11 goals through the first nine games put her only five shy of the Wake Forest single-season record of 16 goals that she set last year as a freshman.
Phillip Aseweh
M, Sr., Liberty, Navrongo, Ghana
The senior midfielder posted three goals and an assist in two games last week. Tuesday, Aseweh scored his first goal of the season in a 2-0 win over No. 12 Virginia. It was Liberty's second goal of the contest, giving the Flames a cushion en route to the program's first-ever win over Virginia. The midfielder followed it up with five points in a 4-0 win over Howard on Friday. He assisted on the game's first goal, stepping in front of a clearing pass and quickly dropping a pass to Timothy Bullock for the score. In the second half, Aseweh scored twice in a three-minute span, scoring on a rebound of a shot and later, converted a penalty kick. The point total was the midfielder's most points in a contest since posting seven in his first game with the Flames in a 10-1 win over Concord, Sept. 1, 2009.

I wish someone uploaded a legible copy of the Bob Gansler & Tony DiCiccio presentations at The Orlando event. I was there, it was awesome, and now I can't read my diagram/notes as to how the ball/players move!
