Tom Sermanni, Head Women's Coach of the Australia Women's National Team (The Matildas), will present at the NSCAA Convention in Kansas City, Mo.  His lecture topic, Women's Soccer in Australia: Changing Philosophy and Perception, is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 14 from 3:45pm to 4:45pm in CC 2103 AB.  Click here to view the full 2012 NSCAA Convention schedule.

Sermanni’s coaching career in both men's and women's professional football has taken him all over the world, including stints in Japan, USA and Malaysia.

Most recently, Sermanni lead the Westfield Matildas to their fifth FIFA Women’s World Cup in June/July 2011, the third time he has lead the team to a World Cup. The tournament, hosted in Germany, saw the Westfield Matildas reach the quarter final stage for the second consecutive tournament following a narrow loss to Brazil in Group D before going on to beat Equatorial Guinea and Norway to progress from the group stage. In the quarter final Australia was beaten 3-1 by Sweden.

Sermanni coached the Women’s National Team, the Westfield Matildas, guiding them to the 1995 FIFA Women's World Cup. He stayed on as coach till 1997, before heading to Japan to take on a head coaching role at J-League club Sanfreece Hiroshima.

He returned to coach Canberra Cosmos in the NSL in 1999 for several years, before getting lured to the USA by the first ever Women’s Professional League – WUSA – and was appointed as an assistant coach of the San Jose CyberRays (2001-02) and then Head Coach of New York Power (2002-03).

With the demise of the WUSA in 2003, Sermanni had a short stint in Malaysia, before returning to coach the Westfield Matildas where they reached the final of the 2006 AFC Women’s Championship and the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2007 in China before this year leading his youthful side to become Champions of Asian when the Westfield Matildas downed DPR Korea 5-4 on penalties in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2010 in China.
