Weekly NSCAA/Continental Tire College Rankings- Nov. 8, 2011

Women

No. 1 Stanford retains the top spot for the fourth straight week as the Cardinal women produced their third consecutive undefeated regular season. The win over Pac-12 rival Cal gave Stanford its third Pac-12 championship in a row and the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. There is a new No. 2 this week, though, as Oklahoma State absorbed its first loss, falling to Texas A&M in the final of the Big 12 Conference tournament. Oklahoma State slips to No. 4 as the Cowgirls were seeded No. 2 in the same region as Stanford in the NCAA Tournament.

UCLA took over the No. 2 spot this week after overpowering USC with a 5-2 win at home, closing out the Bruins’ regular season on a high note. Duke moved into the third spot in the rankings this week despite its loss to No. 6 Wake Forest in the ACC tournament semifinals. No. 9 Florida State went on to defeat Wake Forest 3-1 in penalty kicks in the ACC championship game. Auburn defeated No. 20 Florida in the SEC tournament final by a 3-2, which propelled the Tigers from being unranked and not receiving votes to the No. 24 spot this week.

West Virginia defeated Louisville 2-0 to claim the Big East Tournament title. The Mountaineers settled at No. 10 in the rankings and earned an NCAA Tournament bid. Marquette is the only other Big East team ranked within the top 25 (No. 12). Defending NCAA champions Notre Dame is receiving votes this week and picked up a tournament bid after a tough regular season.

No. 13 Penn State was upset by Illinois in the Big Ten Conference final, 2-1 in overtime. The win moved the Illini from No. 18 to No. 16 this week as well as a bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they will host defending champion Notre Dame in the first round.

Thursday, Nov. 3, marked the last Women’s NCSAA Game of the Week. The match featured Washington and Washington State. The game ended in a 0-0 tie after double overtime. Washington St. will play Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Men

The top four spots remain the same this week, with Connecticut and Maryland tied at fourth. New Mexico finished its regular season undefeated, becoming the second team in school history to do so. The Lobos clinched the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference title Saturday, Nov. 5, with a 3-0 win over UNLV. They will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming MPSF tournament.

Fairfield is receiving votes after becoming the first team to win its conference tournament in men’s play, defeating Manhattan 3-1 in the MAAC tournament final. The win extended Fairfield’s unbeaten streak to 13 games, including a perfect record in conference play. The win earned them an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Big East Conference semifinals begin Friday, Nov. 11, with No. 4 UConn taking on No. 14 Louisville and No. 21 St. John’s facing unranked Villanova. South Florida slipped to No. 10 after a draw against Rutgers and a loss in the first round of the conference tournament to Villanova 0-1 after winning the regular- season title in the Big East’s Red Division.

UCLA clinched its seventh Pac 12 Conference title with a win over Cal last Friday, moving the Bruins from No. 8 to No. 6 with the win. They will wait for the other conferences to play their tournaments to see where they will be placed in the NCAA Tournament. College Cup host UAB jumped four slots to No. 17 after defeating Tulsa 2-1 earning a share of the Conference USA regular-season title with No. 23 South Carolina. Both teams received a first-round bye in the conference.

The final men’s NSCAA Game of the week was broadcast Friday, Nov. 4, with No. 15 UC Santa Barbara defeating Cal Poly 2-0 at home. The game was viewed by 13, 822 fans, the largest crowd for a college soccer game this season. The Gauchos continue to lead the nation with attendance and will play host to UC Davis in the semifinals of the Big West Conference tournament this week.
