This week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America Resource Library feature highlights coaching tactics by Real Madrid Manager and coaching legend José Mourinho entitled “The Mourinho Mystique.” Named “The Special One”, Mourinho’s incredible career boasts titles in the highest leagues and tournaments in the world.

José Mourinho’s managerial career can be traced back to a job with former England manager Bobby Robson in 1992, where he served as Robson’s translator at Sporting Lisbon. After Robson was sacked a year later, Mourinho followed him to Porto in Portugal and Barcelona in Spain to continue translating. He then remained in Spain and began his coaching career.

Since then, Mourinho has managed six different clubs, Benfica, U.D. Leiria, Porto, Chelsea, Internazionale and Real Madrid, in four European countries (Portugal, England, Italy and Spain). With nearly each team, he has won a league title shortly upon his arrival. Over his eight seasons as a manager, Mourinho has led his clubs to seven domestic titles, two Champions League titles and one UEFA Cup. He has managed a total of 567 games and boasts a 69.49 win percentage (394-65-109). Finally, between 2002 and 2011, Mourinho managed 150 home matches without recording a loss.

The featured piece today from José Mourinho discusses how his coaching tactics relate to success. By using “The Global Method of Coaching Soccer”, Mourinho incorporates all four of the pillars of soccer into every exercise: Physical, Mental, Technical and Tactical.

Contents:

·         Global Training through small-sided games.

·         Global Training through adjustments to those games.

·         Adjusting training from the model of play.

·         Effectively creating the weekly cycle of sessions between games.

The Mourinho Mystique has been made available for a short time for both members and non-members. To view the full article, click here. This article, along with hundreds more, can be found in the NSCAA Resource Library at www.nscaa.com/education/library.
