Thursday's women's Atlantic Coast Conference game between No. 8 Virginia and North Carolina State and Friday's men's game featuring No. 9 Akron and No. 10 St. Johns will each be featured as the NSCAA College Game of the Week.
Three MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List players will make appearances both nights, including Virginia’s Morgan Brian (returning from starting for the U.S. U-20 World Championship team) and Caroline Miller, as well as Akron’s Scott Caldwell.
Virginia v. North Carolina State - Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7p.m. ET
This contest is the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule opener for both teams.
Cavalier head coach Steve Swanson returns from coaching the U.S. U-20 World Championship team and looks to lead his team to its eighth-straight victory. Virginia's lone lost was its season opener to Notre Dame and enters tonight's contest 7-1-0.
Against NC State, Virginia is 21-12-1 (10-4-0 at home) with wins in 16 out of the last 17 meetings. Also under Swanson, the program is 9-3-0 in conference openers, winning ACC openers nine times in the past ten seasons.
In addition to Watch List players Brian and Miller, the Cavaliers will also rely on freshman Makenzy Doniak, who leads the group with 17 points on a team-leading seven goals and three assists.
Virginia looks to start Miller, Doniak, junior defender Molly Menchel (who was the ACC top scoring defender of 2011), senior midfielder Julia Roberts, and junior goalkeeper Danielle DeLisle (who is on a 320 minute shutout streak).
The Wolfpack, led by fourth-year head coach Steve Springthorpe, is 5-3-0 overall following a 3-2 loss at Kansas. This year’s squad is rather young, with no seniors and six juniors.
Offensively, NC State is led by redshirt sophomore Jennie Krauser and freshman Brittany Stanko with eight points each. Krauser has three goals and two assists to her credit, while Stanko has a team leading four goals.
Sophomore defender Shelli Spamer, a 2011 ACC All-Freshman Team member, leads the team and the conference with five assists. The only other upperclassmen represented on the defense who may make appearances are sophomores Claudel Pilon and Kasey Koballa.
Akron v. St. John's - Friday, Sept 14 at 7 p.m. ET
The contest featuring the Zips and the Red Storm is only the third time these two programs have met dating back to 1992. The series record is 1-0-1 with St. Johns owning the only win. [Story continued below video]
For his career, seventh-year head coach Caleb Porter owns the highest win percentage among active Division I coaches (.824, 105-17-14). He leads a squad that is 3-1-1 so far this season following a 3-1 loss at Notre Dame on Sunday.
Akron, the 2010 NCAA champion, is also 11-5-5 against NSCAA top 25 teams in regular season play under Coach Porter, including an 8-2-3 record within the previous three years.
Watch List player Caldwell and junior midfielder Eric Stevenson lead Akron with five points, both with two goals and an assist. Holding down the defense will be senior defender Chad Barson and senior goalkeeper David Meves, who has recorded five saves and a 0.96 goals-against average.
Head Coach Dr. Dave Masur and the undefeated men of St. Johns (5-0-1) come into this game from a 2-1 win over William & Mary last Saturday. Credited with one goal each were senior midfielder Jack Bennett and freshman forward Danny Bedoya. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Rafael Diaz tallied a season-high five saves.
The Red Storm has outscored their opposition 13-3 on the year, and their 5-0-1 start is the 10th time in program history they have gone unbeaten in the first six games, the ninth time under Masur.

I wish someone uploaded a legible copy of the Bob Gansler & Tony DiCiccio presentations at The Orlando event. I was there, it was awesome, and now I can't read my diagram/notes as to how the ball/players move!
