CEO Joe Cummings to lead World’s Largest Soccer Coaches’ Organization through 2015
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Executive Committee and Board of Directors have extended CEO Joe Cummings’ contract through 2015.
“On behalf of the NSCAA Executive Committee and Board of Directors, we are pleased to be able to extend Joe’s time with the Association,” said Ralph Polson, NSCAA President. “The NSCAA is continuing to grow and evolve, and that is due to his leadership.”
Cummings has been CEO of the Association since 2009 and is guiding the 30,000-member organization through a period of transition. Since his initial hiring, he has originated several key initiatives, including rebranding the Association, development of a more comprehensive website, the creation and appointment of new national office positions, and a revamp of the NSCAA’s world-renowned coaching education offerings.
Cummings added: “I look forward to continuing the mission and vision of the Association and thank the Executive Committee and Board of Directors for this contract extension. I enjoy working with the national office staff and remain passionate about coach education, events and providing opportunities for all members of the Association. As CEO, I look forward to many more years of serving the NSCAA and our sport.”
Cummings' 30-plus year career has touched soccer at every level of the game, from youth club teams to the men’s and women’s professional ranks. An NSCAA member since 1981, Cummings was the president and general manager of the Boston Breakers franchise of Women’s Professional Soccer before joining the Association’s national office.
He held the same position for the club’s tenure under the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) banner from 2000 to 2003, twice earning the league’s Executive of the Year award (2002, 2003). He also has had two stints with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer, first as its assistant general manager (1996-99), then as technical director (2004-05).
In addition to his professional soccer background, Cummings brought significant administrative experience to the NSCAA. He was the director of operations for the Birmingham venue of the 1996 Olympic Games soccer tournament and the 1999 Women’s World Cup, and also served as venue manager for the Boston and Philadelphia sites for the 2003 Women’s World Cup. He spent two years as CEO and executive director of the Amesbury (Mass.) Sports Park and served as COO of Women’s Professional Soccer, lending his experience and expertise prior to its launch. Cummings also served as the NSCAA’s president in 2004.
Cummings started his career by founding the Northboro (Mass.) Youth Soccer Association. From there, his career path took him to his alma mater, Algonquin Regional High School, and to the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester (Mass.).
Cummings holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Providence College and a master’s in education from Springfield College. He and his wife, Ann Marie, have two sons, Joseph and Paul.
