Georgia Southern’s Katie Merson and Memphis’s Mark Sherrod have been named Disney Soccer/NSCAA Players of the Week for their performance last week.
Merson takes home the final women’s honor of the year, while Sherrod earns a second Disney Soccer/NSCAA Player of the Week nod of his career.
A junior goalkeeper from Albuquerque, N.M., Merson was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Southern Conference Championship last week after posting three tournament shutouts (two of which were posted last week).
She posted an 0.00 goals-against average and nine saves in in 211 minutes of work. In Georgia Southern’s 1-0 win over fifth-seeded Elon, Merson made three saves to aid in the Eagles’ successful bid to make the conference’s title match for the first time since 1996. GSU won that title match against Furman on penalty kicks (5-4) to advance to the program’s first ever NCAA appearance at Wake Forest.
Sherrod, a junior forward from Knoxville, Tenn., tallied three goals in two games last week to close out the Tigers’ regular season. He knocked in his 10th goal of the season to help put away UAB (3-1), then followed up with both Memphis goals in a 2-1 win over No. 14 SMU in last week’s NSCAA College Game of the Week broadcast on FOX Soccer.
Sherrod is tied for second in the C-USA with his 12 goals and 28 points. He also earned his first league Offensive Player of the Week award of the year with this late-season performance.
The Disney Soccer/NSCAA National Players of the Week are announced every Wednesday. One male and one female player is selected by a committee from nominations submitted by NCAA Division I conferences. Next week will be the final men’s award of the 2012 season.
This week’s winners will be recognized on the final NSCAA College Game of the Week broadcast this Friday on FOX Soccer (7 pm ET).
This week’s other women’s nominees included Ohio State senior forward Tiffany Cameron and Florida senior midfielder Erika Tymrak, both of whom have won the award this season.
The other men’s nominees were Elon sophomore goalkeeper Nathan Dean and Wake Forest sophomore forward Sean Okoli.

I wish someone uploaded a legible copy of the Bob Gansler & Tony DiCiccio presentations at The Orlando event. I was there, it was awesome, and now I can't read my diagram/notes as to how the ball/players move!
