Islip High's Santoro and Montville High's Tryon named NSCAA High School Players of the Week
Senior midfielder Morgan Santoro from Islip High School (Islip, N.Y.) and senior forward Jeff Tryon from Montville High School (Oakdale, Conn.) have been named NSCAA High School Players of the Week.
Santoro is finalizing a stellar high school career, aiding the Buccaneers in two sectional wins last week for the Section 11 Championship title. She is a four-year starter who, after wading through several offers from Top 25 college programs, has committed to play at Central Connecticut State next season.
In the last six playoff games in which Islip has appeared in the last two seasons, Santoro either scored or assisted on every goal and leads Long Island, N.Y. in both points and assists. Off the field, Santoro led the team in fundraising for the Kicks for Cancer campaign.
Her head coach, Mike Reilly, said in his nomination: “I’ve coached numerous Division I and collegiate All-Americans […] Morgan Santoro ranks up there with all of them and […] is one of our finest lady soccer student-athletes.”
The other girls' nominees included senior forward Laura Hill (Pike View HS, Princeton, W.V.) and junior midfielder Sydney Sladek (Pahrump Valley HS, Pahrump, Nevada)
Tryon helped the Montville High boys’ team to three big wins last week, improving the team to 18-1-0 overall. The first two wins were in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Tournament, and resulted in the program's first ECC Tournament Championship.
In an overtime win against Waterford, Tryon converted his penalty kick, which would eventually lead to the win for the Indians 5-4 on PK’s. In the conference final against Bacon Academy, he scored two of the team’s three second-half goals to propel Montville to the tournament title. The win also avenged Montville’s lone loss during the regular season to Bacon.
Tryon would also go on to score a game-winning goal in Montville’s debut in the CIAC State Tournament second round in the 3-1 win against Granby. The senior forward currently has 36 goals and 16 assists on the season.
Tryon and the Montville Indians are coached by Colin Delaney.
The other boys' nominees this week were senior forward Jordan Stewart (The Geneva School, Winter Park, Fla.), senior goalkeeper Christian Espinoza (Battle Mountain HS, Edwards, Colo.), junior midfielder Enrique Galan (San Marcos Academy, San Marcos, Texas), and senior forward Frankie Wyatt (Hickory HS, Hickory, N.C.).
The NSCAA High School Player of the Week program is designed to highlight the future stars of the game. Anyone can nominate a player, however only players whose coach is a current NSCAA member are eligible for selection. Honorees are announced on Wednesdays.
The next submission deadline is Monday, Nov.26, followed by the Nov. 28 announcement.
