In late August, ESPN premiered the latest Nine for IX feature, "The 99ers" produced by retired U.S. Women's National Team member Julie Foudy.
The hour-long film provided viewers an inside look at the USWNT squad that made its historic and popular 1999 run to win the World Cup against China.
Watching the special, there were a few thoughts to ponder, and perhaps, implement with your team, as well as supportive material from the NSCAA:
Pregame, halftime and postgame “pep” talks: The USWNT faced Germany and went into halftime down 2-1. Head coach Tony DiCicco gave a pep talk during halftime, advising the team “don’t let you dream end here.” This combined with the other positive thoughts from team members helped the team gather their wits and win that game.

Dealing with adversity: During the aforementioned game, the team had to keep their composure and fight on. In this case, the tides turned in the U.S.’s favor for the win.

Team chemistry: A recent NSCAA.com article featuring two of the 1999 National Team coaches touched on developing team chemistry, but “The 99ers” brought the topic to life. In addition to a positive, supporting environment, the team also fostered an environment of competitiveness that kept each player striving for more.

Challenging your players to go to the next level: In the World Cup final with it all on the line, DiCicco had confidence and trust in his players to challenge them in a high-pressure situation. Though she had reservations and he knew about them, DiCicco entrusted Hamm to take one of the penalty kicks. Another example included when he wanted to throw the Chinese goalkeeper for a loop and asked Brandi Chastain to shoot the PK left footed.

Empowering your players: Throughout the program, the 1999 USWNT players talked about how DiCicco and his coaching staff trusted the players to be able to have fun but also buckle down when needed. There was also a leadership system among the players that allowed some to shine without causing conflict, as well as hold each player accountable for her actions on and off the field.

I wish someone uploaded a legible copy of the Bob Gansler & Tony DiCiccio presentations at The Orlando event. I was there, it was awesome, and now I can't read my diagram/notes as to how the ball/players move!
