Stationary Shooting

From the November 8, 2006, issue of The Technical Area

This installment of the Coaching Corner comes from the new book Soccer Skills and Drills, published by Human Kinetics. It comes from Chapter 4: Shooting. For information on how to order a copy of Soccer Skills and Drills, CLICK HERE.

Purpose: To improve shooting technique using a stationary ball.

Procedure: Place 10 balls randomly at distances and angles appropriate for the age and experience level of the shooter. The shooter moves from ball to ball, shooting at goal. Because the focus is on technical training (rather than endurance training), the shooter takes time to move to the next ball and stops before each shot. Stress the quality of striking each ball. To ensure that technique is correct, the first exercise is with a stationary ball, and the coach addresses only the correct technique of shooting. Any number of players can participate in this drill, but of course the fewer the players, the more repetitions each shooter will get.

Coaching Points: Focus feedback on technical training. Corrections should be simple and singular - too much information will clutter and impede the players' thought and striking processes.
