Throughout the United States are hundreds of thousands of men and women who once played soccer, a latent yet formidable force for positive change for the sport. They stay in touch with former teammates, tune in to Fox Soccer Channel for coverage of the sport and raise a knowing eyebrow when they see soccer themes creeping into modern marketing campaigns.
In their hearts, they recall the special times and special friends they enjoyed through The Beautiful Game.
Imagine the impact these alumni of the game could have on the American sports landscape if they were to unify under one banner and speak with one voice. Imagination now has the opportunity to become reality through a new program created by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The NSCAA Soccer Ambassadors program seeks to draw back to the game those who have drifted away as they have pursued their lives, giving them a chance to give back to the game that has given them so much.
"The diversity of the American soccer culture is a positive and we must continue to open doors to all in order to grow the game. What soccer needs is for these diverse groups to recognize the magnitude of their collective voices and joining all those with a connection to the game, past and present. The NSCAA is a connective community of people who support each other for the good of the game. The NSCAA Soccer Ambassadors can be the connection to gather soccer's individual voices." - Anson Dorrance, University of North Carolina Women's Coach.
Adding to this heritage of soccer players returning to support their sport are the significant numbers of fans, parents, coaches and enthusiasts from all areas of the sport that have been drawn into the soccer family. Soccer Ambassadors recognizes that these groups of passionate soccer supporters are equally as critical to the success, Along with former players all will unite in a common cause: the Greater Good of the Game!
"The NSCAA and Soccer Ambassadors is an initiative for soccer. Our game needs a clear voice and a network possessing influence and impact...Soccer Ambassadors will fill these needs. The Soccer Ambassadors' goal is simply the greater good of the game. The need is now. The vision is right. Soccer is too important in American to take a back seat. I've joined. Please consider it." - Tony DiCicco, former U.S. Women's National Team Coach

"Soccer is the world's most popular sport and universally recognized as 'the people's game.' Soccer's history in the U.S. is fascinating and as diverse as our population. However, the acceptance of the game into the mainstream of our sporting culture has been slow to develop in comparison to soccer's popularity among its millions of enthusiasts. The Soccer Ambassadors program is designed to unite all factions of the game in the common cause of further advancing the sport through awareness, promotion and education. Only when local, regional and national decision-makers and people of influence stand behind our sport and strategically navigate its future will we achieve national recognition and acceptance. Join the Soccer Ambassadors and have an impact on the growth of the beautiful game." - Glenn Myernick, Assistant Coach, U.S. Men's National Team
The Goals of the Soccer Ambassadors Program
By bringing together former soccer participants, the Soccer Ambassadors hope to give the sport a strong, united voice that will elevate soccer to a higher level on the American sporting landscape. They would be involved in activities such as:
- Supporting efforts at the local, state, regional and national levels for the greater good of the game by serving as advocates for the sport;
- Creation of a communication system to support the efforts of the organization and offer professional networking opportunities;
- Developing a far-reaching network of people committed to the good of the game, one that extends beyond the artificial boundaries of current organizations;
- Supporting the efforts of the NSCAA's Coaching Education program to promote a greater understanding of the game among American soccer coaches.
