Each fall in Soccer Journal we review the liability insurance coverage provided each NSCAA member as a membership benefit. For new members, this may be new information; for old members this will be a review.
The program was implemented July 1, 1994. At the time, NSCAA executive director Jim Sheldon noted that the liability insurance program was "perhaps the most significant membership benefit ever implemented by the NSCAA." It was in direct response to a membership survey taken in the fall of 1993, which indicated overwhelmingly (75.2%) that liability insurance would be a valued membership benefit.
In the years that coverage has been provided to NSCAA members, the benefits have remained unchanged. The premiums have dropped slightly as a result of good loss experience and changing market conditions. As outlined in the accompanying benefits summary, the policy provides $1 million excess liability coverage for each member while performing his or her duties as a soccer coach in an organized league, including practice and games, and in their coaching and instructing capacities at clinics and camps.
We are often asked by the NSCAA members, "Does it cover my camp?" This plan is not designed to replace traditional liability insurance for a camp or clinic operation that covers the camp/clinic as an entity, as well as other coaches, instructors and staff. It also does not provide certificates of insurance, often required by facility owners, that name the facility as an additional insured.
This program is designed to be a personal form of liability coverage for each member It essentially follows you as you perform your duties as a soccer coach in an organized league, including practice and games and while coaching or instructing in clinics or camps, regardless of whether or not the camp has coverage.
This program has provided a significant benefit to all members at a cost unattainable if purchased individually by a coach. With the losses being minimal to date, we expect the coverage to remain in effect at an affordable price to respond to future claims submitted by the association or its members.
