Santa Clara, Virginia players become first to win unified Player of the Year awards


Senior midfielder Aly Wagner of Santa Clara University and junior forward Alecko Eskandarian of the University of Virginia are the winners of the 2002 Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy, presented to the top male and female players in NCAA Division I soccer. The winners were decided by a vote of current National Soccer Coaches Association of America members at the NCAA Division I level.

High School Team Academic Awards Handed Out
101 Boys, 186 Girls teams receive recognition for performance in classroom


A total of 287 high school soccer sides from across the United States have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award for exemplary performance in the classroom as a team during the 2001-02 academic year. Among those 287 programs are 30 schools receiving honors for both its boys and girls teams.

Stanford University's men's soccer team has demonstrated excellence on the field by earning a spot in the semifinals of the Men's College Cup. Three Cardinal players also have achieved excellence in the classroom, earning a spot on the NSCAA/adidas Men's Collegiate Scholar All-America Team.

Two national championship sides garner academic honors to complement success on the field


The University of Portland and Ohio Wesleyan University women prove there is more to a succesful program than winning games, or in the case of these two squads, national championships. Each program recently took home an NCAA title and now adds the NSCAA Team Academic Award, earned for success in the classroom, to its list of accomplishments.

Oklahoma City's Cole becomes a four-time honoree


Sally Cole, a senior defender from Oklahoma City University, completed a career sweep by earning a spot on the 2002 NSCAA/adidas Women's NAIA All-America Team, giving her the honor each of her four seasons playing for the Stars. She is one of nine players making repeat appearances on the team.

Lohman, Ngwenya are the first juniors to win the award


A pair of juniors, Joanna Lohman of Penn State University and Joseph Ngwenya of Coastal Carolina University, have been named the NSCAA/adidas Scholar Athletes of the Year. They are the first players to win the award in their junior years, giving them the opportunity to become the first repeat winners in 2003.

Portland's Clive Charles earns women's Division I honors; Giuliano takes third in four years


Two coaching veterans who earned their first NCAA Division I national championships have been named NSCAA/adidas National Coaches of the Year.

Veteran mentor Clive Charles, who has led the University of Portland to the national championship game six times before breaking through this season claimed the women’s honor, while UCLA’s Tom Fitzgerald, in his first year at the Bruins helm, won the men’s award. The honors were announced at the NSCAA Awards Banquet, held in conjunction with the 2003 NSCAA Convention in Kansas City, Mo.



Cieplik Receives 61st NSCAA Honor Award
U.S. Coast Guard Academy's athletics director honored


Dr. Ray Cieplik, the long-time soccer coach and current director of athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, is the 61st recipient of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's 2002 Honor Award, presented in Kansas City on Jan. 17.

Three Receive Long-Term Service Awards
Aliceann Wilber of Willliam Smith becomes the first woman to win the Bill Jeffrey Award


Three coaches who have dedicated themselves to the advancement of soccer at the youth, high school and collegiate levels were recognized with the presentation of the National Soccer Coaches Association of American Long-Term Service Awards.

The recipients, announced at the annual NSCAA Awards Banquet on Jan. 17, 2003, were: David Hicks, Springfield, Ill., for the Youth Long-Term Service Award; Vic Garcia, Monument, Colo., the Robert W. Robinson Award for long-term service to high school soccer; and Aliceann Wilber, the Bill Jeffrey Award for long-term service to intercollegiate soccer.



NSCAA College Team Ethics Award Winners Announced
Eight teams complete the 2002 season without receiving a card


Eight intercollegiate teams received the NSCAA's Gold Team Ethics Award for completing the entire 2002 season without receiving either a yellow or red card. A total of 60 teams received the Team Ethics Award, which recognizes teams that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the Laws of the Game, as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season.
