NSCAA Presents 2002 College Team Academic Awards
Two national championship sides garner academic honors to complement success on the field
The University of Portland and Ohio Wesleyan University women prove there is more to a succesful program than winning games, or in the case of these two squads, national championships. Each program recently took home an NCAA title and now adds the NSCAA Team Academic Award, earned for success in the classroom, to its list of accomplishments.

In all, 67 men's and 213 women's programs earned the award by achieving a 3.0 GPA or higher as a team during the 2001-02 academic year. Six coaches share the distinction of heading up both men's and women's teams receiving the honor.

Anderson University's Scott Fridley, Carleton's Robert Carlson, Maryville College's Pepe Fernandez, Missouri Southern's Geoff VanDeusen, Piedmont's Jason Smith and Webber International's Steve Warner head up both programs at their respective schools with each earning the Team Academic Award. A total of 42 institutions garned the accolade for both its men's and women's sides.

The awards will be presented at the College Coaches Luncheon Thursday, Jan. 16 during the 2003 NSCAA Convention, held Jan. 15-19 in Kansas City, Mo.
