Playing FAvorites (May 2004)
By Jay Martin

Under the direction and guidance of NSCAA’s Director of Coaching Education, Jeff Tipping, and Executive Director Jim Sheldon, the NSCAA has aggressively sought a relationship with the English Football Association. The relationship began with visits and coach exchanges and has grown to include the NSCAA offering a Premier course in April in England and the FA’s psychology course online through NSCAA.com. As of mid-April, 52 coaches had earned their FA psychology qualification through the NSCAA’s web site. The NSCAA membership will only benefit from this relationship in the future.

Soccer Journal gets into the act with this issue. Robin Russell and the FA have agreed to an exchange of articles in the future between SJ and Insight, the FA magazine. Insight began in 1998 and quickly became a very important and respected soccer publication. Under the leadership of Howard Wilkinson, the Technical Director of the FA at the time, Insight tapped the resources in England and Europe and began the process of upgrading and disseminating soccer knowledge in England.

Insight offered new concepts to FA coaches from people like sports psychologist and old friend Bill Beswick, FA staff members and “guest authors” from Europe. Insight also began offering the FA research articles that dealt directly with soccer. In the beginning most of the research came from Liverpool’s John Moores University. Today it is not unusual to see articles from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and many other countries, including the United States. Insight is free to all FA members.

From the first issue and continuing in every subsequent issue, Insight has offered a series of articles called “Five Favorite Practices.” Coaches from throughout England were asked to submit their five favorite practices. In the next six issues of Soccer Journal, we are pleased to be able to offer a reprint from Insight of one of the “Five Favorite Practices.” It makes sense to start with then-FA Director Howard Wilkinson (who left the FA to coach at Sunderland – for a while) and his “Five Favorite Practices.”

We all have favorites. When called upon to offer a clinic or presentation we all have favorite sessions we fall back on and present. In fact, we can present these sessions in our sleep! Bob Warming, for example, likes the “continuous 3 v. 2 and 2 v. 1” session. In the next six months SJ will ask many of you for your “Five Favorite Practices.” When we stop running the Insight pieces, we will offer “Five Favorite Practices” from NSCAA members. You can help us with this ambitious project by sending your five favorite sessions to: Favorite Practices, c/o Soccer Journal, 6700 Squibb Road, Suite 215, Mission, KS 66202.
