More to Come (November 2003)
By Janet Rayfield

It is Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003. The deadline to submit this, my final President’s Corner,  has been extended – not because I have procrastinated (though ordinarily that might be a good assumption). How could I summarize and reflect on the past few months before the completion of the Women’s World Cup?

I wrote in my first article about the coincidence that the two female presidents of the NSCAA will have served terms during Women’s World Cup years – as it turned out both with USA as the host country. I only wish that the results had been the same.

My wish for the 2003 World Cup Team, taken from the first female President Laurie Whitsel, was “may your tenacious spirit last through the final minute.” To the entire squad and coaching staff – thanks for answering my prayer and thanks for once again showing the competitiveness, the tenacity and the class that has made you the BEST. Two World Championships, Olympic gold, Olympic silver and two World Cup Bronze medals – that is an incredible legacy. In 10 months, that legacy will grow!

But more important than the legacy of winning and medals is the legacy of dedication to the sport. Through your efforts and those of the soccer community, the WUSA was born and for three years created dreams and inspired young girls throughout the world. Women’s soccer around the world has improved (maybe the league helped other countries too much).

Women’s sports will continue to grow and women’s professional soccer will be back! I have faith that corporate entities will see the value – not just in the sport, but in the people. As MasterCard might say – investing in the WUSA: ($$$$$)...investing in the dreams of young people: PRICELESS.

What a year. It is amazing to me that I have spent this year as president of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The honor to have served the greatest coaches organization in the world is humbling.
My goal for the year was to help guide this “ship” along the course mapped out by our strategic plan and also to bring into sight new destinations for the future. The review of our five-year strategic plan that began in 2001 showed great progress towards the educational, membership and marketing objectives outlined in that plan. The Association has expanded strategic partnerships, developed new educational initiatives and made great steps towards advancing our use of technology to carry out our mission of educating, serving and encouraging excellence.

The NSCAA’s future is limitless because the talents and the abilities of its members, leaders and staff are infinite. I know that incoming president Joe Cummings and the rest of the Board of Directors will take the NSCAA to places we have not yet imagined. I can’t wait!

To the Board, to the National Office and to the members – thank you for making this such a memorable and rewarding experience. To the Past Presidents – especially Laurie as the first female president – thank you for having the vision to create, sustain and grow the NSCAA and for building such a strong foundation. A steady ship is easy to guide. It has truly been an honor and a pleasure.
