Speed Dribbling Through the Thirds
From the August 29, 2007, issue of The Technical Area

This installment of the Coaching Corner comes from the new book Soccer Skills and Drills, published by Human Kinetics. It comes from Chapter 8: Applying Techniques Tactically. For information on how to order a copy of Soccer Skills and Drills, CLICK HERE.

Purpose: To develop accuracy with the long pass.

Procedure: This is a variation of the previous tip, "Long Passing to Forwards."  Speed dribbling can be developed by adding a player or players into the middle third of the field. The animation shows Attacker 1 being played out of the back third by Attacker 3. Attacker 1 runs the ball and plays a wall pass with Attacker 6 and the continues sprinting the ball into the final third.

Coaching Points: The coach is striving to make training replicate what players will experience in real games. As soon as the players understand what happens in a small soccer environment (smaller space or smaller numbers), the coach complicates the environment by making the space larger (more like the real game) and increasing the number of players in that space (more like the real game).
