Tracking and Defensive Clearances in the Box
From the September 12, 2007, issue of The Technical Area

This installment of the Coaching Corner comes from the new book Soccer Skills and Drills, published by Human Kinetics. It comes from Chapter 8: Applying Techniques Tactically. For information on how to order a copy of Soccer Skills and Drills, CLICK HERE.

Purpose: To practice clearing in dangerous situations.

Procedure: Correct positioning of defenders marking runners in the box allows balls to be headed clear in dangerous situations. The animation shows an attacking forward who has bent away from the ball as an attack is being developed down the right flank. The defender must mark the attacker by not being so tight that the forward can sprint by him or her. Likewise, the defender must not lay off so far that the forward can gain running momentum to outjump the defender for the header. The defender will be on the ballside, between the attacker and the goal, and a step ahead of the attacker. This positioning ensures that the defender is first to the ball.
