The Master Coach Program
The Master Coach program is the NSCAA's response to a growing trend in coaching education - that of continuous self-improvement.  The program, designed to meet the needs of the American coach, offers an opportunity for coaches to develop a mastery of the profession of coaching.

Extending the 150 hours of field instruction presently offered through NSCAA Academy courses, the Master Coach is a program consisting of 20 projects that candidates complete at their own pace.  Candidates who successfully complete the curriculum should become what Andy Roxburgh (Technical Director - UEFA) terms a "Da Vinci Coach" and be positioned to be an influential figure in the evolution of an American soccer culture.

The Master Coach program entails an 18-month-long commitment to continued growth in coaching education that spans far beyond the field.  Candidates will work with a current NSCAA staff member, who will serve as a mentor and a guide for the duration of the course.  In addition to the self-guided projects, interaction with other Master Coach candidates is expected to be a large component of the coursework.

The Master Coach program is divided into six divisions, listed below.  Half of the program's curriculum will be focused in the candidate's area of emphasis, with the other half of the curriculum covering topics suitable for all American coaches.

Master Coach Divisions
  • Professional
  • College
  • Director of Coaching
  • Youth
  • Junior
  • High School

The pinnacle of the NSCAA Academy system, the Master Coach program is oriented toward coaches who already have significant knowledge and are looking to continue their professional growth. Applicants for the Master Coach must be current members of the NSCAA and are expected to have passed the NSCAA Premier Diploma with a grade of "Good Pass" or higher. The committee may consider applicants who have earned a grade of “Pass” in the Premier Diploma on the basis of contributions to the wider soccer community, a distinguished track record, or completion of other specialized NSCAA courses such as the Director of Coaching Diploma, High School Coaches Diploma or Youth/Advanced Youth Diploma.

The next Master Coach class will be enrolled in January 2010. The application process for the 2010 cohort is closed.  Candidates have been selected, and all applicants will receive written notice of their status by September 30, 2009.

What they're saying about it:
"The Master Coach program pushed me to touch all areas of the coaching profession and challenged me to look outside the box and investigate the many different responsibilities of a coach at the collegiate level.  The course gave me the opportunities to visit England and study at top professional clubs, spend four incredible days with the Columbus Crew during their run for the MLS Cup Championship and continually receive feedback from one of the most experienced and knowledgeable college coaches in the nation, Bret Simon.  I would have never been able to participate in this type of professional development without this program."
- Rob Herringer, Men's Soccer Coach, Benedictine University (Master Coach, 2009)

The NSCAA recently recognized the first full class of Master Coach diploma recipients in a ceremony at the 63rd Annual Convention in St. Louis, Mo.
